Endodontic Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy is one of the most common dental procedures performed in the United States. Americans receive more than 14 million root canals every year. This simple nonsurgical treatment is designed to save your natural tooth and eliminate loss of that tooth and the need for dental implants or a dental bridge.
The material at the center of your tooth is called pulp. It’s a collection of blood vessels that helps nourish the surrounding tooth. Trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips or repeated dental procedures can lead to infection of the pulp. Symptoms of infection include visible injury, swelling of the tooth and surrounding gum, sensitivity to temperature and pain in the tooth and gums.
The Root Canal Procedure
If you experience any of the above symptoms, Dr. Audrey will likely recommend nonsurgical treatment to eliminate the diseased pulp. She will remove the injured pulp and thoroughly clean, disinfect and seal the root canal system using the latest endodontic therapy techniques. This therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits, depending on the extent of treatment required. The success rate for this treatment is about 90%.
