Crowns Q & A

What is a crown?

A crown is an artificial tooth that covers the crown of your natural tooth (the area that extends above the gum line). Dr. Audrey specializes in porcelain crowns that are fitted and installed in one day. More complex cases may take two appointments.

How do I know if I need a crown?

When your tooth is damaged beyond repair, a dental crown can cover and stabilize it so that you don’t require an extraction. Signs that you may need a crown include:

  • Cracked, chipped, or broken teeth
  • Worn teeth
  • Stained teeth
  • Old, broken, or painful fillings
  • Functional issues with your teeth
  • Bite problems

Crowns are also used to cap a root canal and to cover abutment teeth that have been filed down for a dental bridge. If you get a dental implant, Dr. Audrey caps it with a crown so that your implant looks, feels, and acts like a real tooth.

What are the best types of crowns?

The best types of crowns are strong, yet undetectable. Crowns should look and function exactly like your original teeth. Dr. Audrey prefers to work with crowns made of 100% high-quality fired porcelain, or porcelain that’s been fused to pure, high-karat gold.

What happens when I get a crown?

When you get a same-day crown, Dr. Audrey’s team uses CAD/CAM (computer-assisted design and manufacturing) technology to create a crown for you while you wait. You don’t need to sit for impressions or come back for a fitting. You leave the office with your permanent crown cemented in place.

If your damage is severe, or if you have any infection or other complications, you may need two visits to Algonquin Smiles. During your first visit, Dr. Audrey removes decay, and then cleans and shapes your tooth. She fits you with a temporary crown while your permanent crown is made.

On your second visit, Dr. Audrey removes the temporary crown and cements the permanent crown in place. You now have a beautiful-looking, functional tooth.

Don’t wait until your tooth requires an extraction. If you have damaged, stained, broken, or infected teeth, call Algonquin Smiles for a beautiful and natural dental crown or book an appointment online.
